The term "camail" is an ancient term meaning "curtain-mail" describing the protective curtain of chainmail hung from the helm that draped the neck to the shoulders in battle. Historically a plate gorget was also worn with this helm along with chainmail body armor for extra protection. Examples may be seen today in church brass castings.
